A peak season surcharge is not a rate increase. It is a temporary fee a carrier adds to every parcel, or every kilogram, during the busiest weeks, and it disappears when the window closes. The amount, the dates and even the unit differ by carrier, country and contract. This guide lists what bpost, PostNL, DHL, UPS and FedEx have published for 2026, says plainly what we could not confirm, and shows how to keep your exposure down. Why the same parcel costs different amounts Carriers use two models. Flat-fee carriers such as bpost, PostNL and DHL Paket charge per parcel, so a light parcel pays as much as a heavy one. DHL Express and UPS international charge per kilogram of billable weight, so heavy or bulky parcels pay far more: at €0.30 per kg, a 2 kg parcel adds €0.60 and a 20 kg parcel adds €6.00, before fuel. The windows differ too, from 20 September (UPS) to 27 November (bpost). A parcel handed over on 20 November carries a surcharge at PostNL Belgium and the express carriers, but not yet at bpost. Five ways to keep surcharges off your invoice Know the exact window. The bpost window opens at 06:00 on 27 November, so a dispatch cut-off just before it is worth money. Move replenishment and trade orders ahead of the windows. Match the carrier to the parcel. Flat fees punish light parcels and per-kg fees punish heavy ones, so the cheapest carrier changes with the parcel. Choosing per parcel, rather than one carrier per country, is where the saving is. Shrink the box. On per-kg lanes, volumetric weight is billed. A box that fits cuts the surcharge directly. Combine multi-parcel orders. A flat fee is charged per parcel, so an order sent in two parcels pays twice. Plan returns and audit January. PostNL Belgium charges returns too. Check the invoice afterwards for dates and parcel counts. Where we could not confirm an amount DHL Express and UPS amounts depend on the country where the account is billed, and the figures above use Germany and Italy. PostNL Netherlands, FedEx Europe, DPD, GLS and the French networks have no published 2026 flat amount that we could confirm. For those, ask your carrier or provider and check your contract rather than rely on any table, including this one. How carrier choice fits into fulfilment Efulfilment Europe selects the carrier for every parcel from 75+ carrier options, weighing destination, delivery speed, service level and cost. Weight and window are therefore part of the decision for each order, not a single contract rate. Peak surcharges sit on top of the fuel surcharge, which has its own index. Frequently asked questions What is a peak season surcharge? A temporary fee that carriers add during their busiest weeks, usually between Black Friday and Christmas. It is charged per parcel or per kilogram on top of the normal rate and ends when the window closes. How much is the bpost peak surcharge in 2026? The bpost surcharge is €1.00 per domestic parcel, bpack XL excluded, from 06:00 on 27 November to 06:00 on 25 December 2026. It comes on top of the €0.14 energy surcharge that applies to domestic parcels all year. How much is the PostNL peak surcharge in 2026? PostNL Belgium charges €0.32 per parcel from 15 November to 31 December 2026, returns included. PostNL’s Dutch business page lists no peak surcharge, so check your contract for Netherlands shipments. When does the DHL peak surcharge start in 2026? DHL Express charges per kilogram from 1 October 2026 to 5 February 2027. DHL Paket in Germany charges €0.19 per parcel in November and December, plus €0.50 from 23 November to 6 December. Do peak surcharges apply to returns? Sometimes. PostNL Belgium applies its surcharge to returns and parcels abroad, and DHL Paket’s covers returns too. Other carriers depend on the contract, so check the terms. Can I avoid peak season surcharges? Not entirely, but you can reduce them: ship before the window opens, choose the carrier per parcel by weight, use smaller boxes on per-kg lanes and combine multi-parcel orders.
